SOUTH MERTHYR LOCAL GROUP

FOLLOWING A REVIEW OF LOCAL STREETS AS PART OF THE WELLBEING AND HEALTH IN YNYSOWEN (WHY) INITIATIVE, WE'VE BROADENED OUR ACTIVITIES TO BECOME THE 'TALKY, WALKY, KICKY CLUB'.

The creation of the South Merthyr Living Streets group gives local residents the chance to socialise and discuss local concerns through monthly walks, mutual support activities and walking football.

WHAT WE'RE DOING

We signpost the activities of other groups including the Merthyr Ramblers and Treharris Ramblers, but we're more about social discussions on anything and everything, helping to identify problems and find solutions, irrespective of which local community we come from. We like to talk.

We arrange a monthly walk from a 'rainbow' menu of walks to enable people, particularly older people, to be more active and appreciate our local streets, trails and heritage sights. We like to walk.

And a few of us play walking football as part of the newly established Deep Navi Gators WFC. We also like to kick.

OUR MAIN AREAS OF PRIORITY
  • Talking about concerns in our local communities, whether that's dodgy pavements, litter problems or finding ways we can help to improve our environment.
  • Arranging social walks to promote wellbeing and tackle loneliness and isolation, working with Trinity Childcare & Family Centre.
  • Promoting walking football as a means for older people to keep fit and active, in association with Treharris Boys & Girls Club.
  • Signposting support and offering help wherever and whenever we can, because none of us is as good as all of us, working together.
