Oxford Street pedestrianisation plans - comment

The Mayor of London and Government have announced bold plans to transform Oxford Street (17 September 2024).

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, proposes to transform world-famous Oxford Street, in new plans backed by the Government. At the heart of the Mayor’s plans is delivering proposals to pedestrianise the road.

Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking has campaigned for the street to be pedestrianised.

Catherine Woodhead, Chief Executive, Living Streets comments:

“Oxford Street is not currently safe for people walking and wheeling. It has an appalling road casualty and air pollution record. Pedestrianisation is the only answer to make our capital's landmark street safer and cleaner. These plans are great news for everyone who lives, works and visits Oxford Street, securing the street’s future as a world-class destination.

“Cities around the world are beginning to realise that by encouraging more people to walk they can create a healthier, more equal society while attracting business and economic growth.  It is great to see London following their lead and hopefully inspiring a whole host of walkable cities UK-wide.”
