WOW 2023-24 BADGE FACTS

LEARN ABOUT THIS YEAR'S WOW BADGES!

This year's WOW theme is THE BRITISH NATURE WALK.

This theme aims to bring pupils closer to the nature found across Britain! From spritely foxes to very woolly cows – there’s a badge for every young nature enthusiast. As pupils walk to school through the year they will learn and collect badges depicting urban and rural British landscape and animals.

SEPTEMBER 2023

URBAN FOX

WORLE VILLAGE PRIMARY SCHOOL, NORTH SOMERSET

FACTS:

  • Foxes can make more than 40 different sounds which all have their own meaning.
  • When fox pups are born, they are unable to see, hear or walk.
  • Foxes are the only canines that can retract their claws like felines.

INCHKEITH

FACTS:

  • Inchkeith is a lighthouse on an Island in Scotland. If you want to climb it, there are 64 steps to the top! 
  • There are nearly 270 working lighthouses in the UK. 208 of these are in Scotland. 
  • The first ever lighthouse was built in ancient Egypt by a Pharaoh.

NIGHT OWLS

FACTS:

  • The 5 common owl species in the UK are the tawny owl, long-eared owl, barn owl, little owl, and short-eared owl. 
  • Owls have the best night vision of any animal on earth! This helps them hunt for food in the dark. 
  • A group of owls is called a parliament.

ROBIN

FACTS:

  • Robins are famous for their red chests, but they are born with brown chests which only turn red as adults.
  • Robins lay bright blue eggs, and the smaller eggs are usually more blue than bigger ones. 
  • Robins may look friendly, but they don't like sharing their space, and can get aggressive with other birds.

WELSH LANDSCAPE

FACTS:

  • The top of a mountain is called a summit, and the bottom is called the base.
  • Wales has 188 mountains over 2000ft. The tallest is Snowdon - which is a whopping 3560ft tall!
  • A very rare flower called the Snowdon Lily grows in the Welsh Mountains.

HIGHLAND COW

FACTS:

  • The Highland Cow is the oldest registered breed of cattle in the world!
  • Highland cows have 4 stomachs - this means they can digest plants more easily than other animals.
  • Highland cows are very friendly and sociable. Some cows even appear have best friends!

ROCHDALE CANAL

FACTS:

  • Rochdale Canal was opened in 1804 and crosses the Pennines Mountain range.
  • There are over 2000 miles of canals in the UK, which help us transport important materials easily between cities.
  • Lots of people live on UK canals, often living nomadically (which means they move around a lot).

PARK SQUIRREL

FACTS:

  • The UK is home to two squirrel species: the Eurasian red squirrel and the grey squirrel.
  • Squirrels may fall from a height of 30 meters without hurting themselves.
  • Squirrels are omnivorous, meaning they eat both plants and meat. They mainly feed on nuts, seeds, fruits, fungi and insects.

BUTTERFLY SANCTUARY

FACTS:

  • The most common butterfly in the UK is called Meadow Brown, and it is brown and orange.
  • Butterflies can taste with their feet.
  • Most butterflies struggle to fly when it is less than 15⁰C, so butterfly houses are often very warm.

BEES AND HIVE

FACTS:

  • An average beehive has over 30,000 bees in summer. They work together to pollinate our crops.
  • Bees can learn to recognise human faces.
  • Bees can see blues and purples the best, so they love flowers like lavender and foxgloves.

WEYMOUTH SEAL

FACTS:

  • There are over 50,000 common seals in the UK.
  • Seals are semi aquatic, which means they can sleep in the water and on land.
  • When seals dive in the sea, the temperature of their brain drops, which allows them to dive a lot deeper than other animals.
